5 things to know New Year's Eve edition

The world rings in 2014
Nineteen hours before the ball drops in New York City's Times Square, the Republic of Kiribati will welcome 2014. That's 5 a.m. on New York's clock. New Zealand, Russia, Australia and Japan join the snowball effect as the year turns across the globe. USA TODAY follows the action with live video and Twitter feeds at usatoday.com and on our tablet apps.
Scrap the Champagne for champagne to save a few bucks
If you toast the new year with some bubbly, known your vocabulary. "Champagne" (with a capital C) is reserved for the sparkling wine produced in the Champagne region of France. Watching your budget? Try prosecco, which is sparking wine produced in Italy, or crémant, a champagne-like wine produced in France. Just don't be too cheap, warns David Speer, one of Food and Wine Magazine's Top 10 Sommeliers of the Year. A bad hangover usually accompanies drinking the cheap stuff because the winemaker will add a lot of sugar to make it more drinkable, he says.
Share your New Year's resolutions
If you could, what resolutions would you make for prominent figures? Politicians? Celebs? Athletes? Now's your chance to let USA TODAY know by uploading your photo or video to Your Take on our website or mobile app.
Resolutions we'd like to see
There are many resolutions the Editorial Board at USA TODAY would like to see from people who made news in 2013. For example, wouldn't it be nice to see President Obama resolve to, "be more careful about promises that involve the words 'like' and 'keep?'" Or how about the National Security Agency resolving to, "spy on enemies, not friends," in 2014? Maybe former NBA star Dennis Rodman will resolve to to find some new friends (preferably ones not prone to executing their uncles and brutally repressing millions of people).
At this New Year's Eve party, 'you shut up'
New Yorkers not too far away from Times Square will pass the waning hours of 2013without saying a word. It's a 25-year tradition at Jivamukti Yoga, which invites those who would like to spend New Year's Eve reflecting, meditating or doing a headstand. All in silence.
