5 things you need to know Friday

1. Amazon Fire phone is released for AT&T
Amazon lights the first ember of its Fire on Friday, as it releases its smartphone -- a first for the company. Equipped with a 3D "Dynamic Perspective" visual output, a 4.7 inch screen and a number of other features, the phone brings glimmers of innovation to an already packed smartphone market. Tech reporter Ed Baig (@edbaig) played with Fire earlier this week and highlighted the pros and con of the new device.

2. French troops recover Air Algerie black box; no survivors found
French President Francois Hollande announced that troops dispatched to secure the site in Mali where an Air Algerie jetliner with 116 people aboard crashed Thursdayfound no survivors but were able to recover one of the plane's two black boxes. 51 French nationals were among the 116 people aboard the plane, which went down in an area active with ethnic Tuareg separatists and al-Qaeda-linked Islamic extremists.
3. Wrongly accused man is exonerated by DNA test
Michael Phillips, 57, who spent 12 years in prison on a rape conviction in Texas, will be exonerated Friday of his status as a sex offender in the state. The man, now in a nursing home, is the first to be exonerated through DNA testing he did not request.
4. 'Hercules' opens in theaters nationwide
Wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson takes the Greek legend to the big screen in an action flick focusing on the trials of the warrior. Johnson ate a seven-meal-a-day "Hercules diet" and adhered to a strict exercise routine to bulk up for the movie, which co-stars swimsuit model Irina Shayk in her acting debut. Film CriticClaudia Puig (@claudiapuig) reviewed the blockbuster.
5. Paris Hilton back to burgers and bikinis
Roughly nine years after a commercial featuring a bikini-clad Hilton washing her Bentley while eating a Hardee's/Carl's Jr. burger went wild on the Internet, she's back at it again. But this time, she's in a cameo role in an ad also featuring a bikini-wearing, up-and-coming Sports Illustrated model, washing a muddy truck while munching a burger. Executives are betting that Hilton still carries enough cachet to attract Millennials and steer folks away from more conventional fast-food chains such as McDonald's or Burger King.

Scientist Robert Edwards won Nobel Prize for his work with the then-controversial procedure that helped Brown's parents conceive her and, four years later, her sister Natalie. Last year, the number of test-tube babies topped 5 million since Brown was born. Happy birthday, Louise!
