1. Reuven Rivlin to be sworn in as Israeli president
President-elect Reuven Rivlin will be officially sworn in by parliament Thursday succeeding Shimon Peres, a Nobel peace laureate who brought the position international prestige. Chosen last month,Rivlin's appointment comes at a contentious time for Israel in the midst of conflict with Palestine. Rivlin himself has come under fire for some of his views in regards to the conflict – opposing the creation of a Palestinian state in the country.
2. Astronaut Buzz Aldrin to address Comic-Con International
On the anniversary of Apollo 11's return to Earth, the space pioneer himself will address fans at NASA's Next Giant Leap panel during Comic-Con International's first full day. Actor Seth Green will moderate the discussion, as the veteran astronaut and a number of scientists – including Internet's famed 'Mohawk Guy' Bobak Ferdowsi – reflect on past space missions and look ahead to the future. Carly Mallenbaum(@ThatGirlCarly), Brian Truitt (@briantruitt) and Bill Keveney (@billkev) are covering the convention and will be tweeting the latest updates.
Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon 45 years ago and is now using social media to help others celebrate the historic event.
3. Lumberjack World Championships begin in Hayward, Wis.
It's going down. They're yelling timber. The Lumberjack World Championships begins Thursday and is sure to bring out the forest's brawniest to see who will win the title. There are over 21 events throughout the competition, including logrolling, pole climbing and a number of other wood-based activities. Over 100 male and female lumberjacks come together each year, with around 12,000 yearly spectators.
Students are learning lumberjack skills at the annual Adirondack Woodsmen's School being held this summer amid the tall pines and placid waters of Paul Smith's College. (July 15) AP
4. Foursquare rebrands, unveils new app and logo
Checking in is going to look a lot different. Social media app Foursquare – pioneers for tagging location – announced a major rebranding that will shift its app away from "checking in" at certain locations around the world to more on helping users search for nearby places. The company's rebrand aims to better compete with local search platforms like Yelp and Google Places and will include an entirely new logo.
5. FAA lifts ban on flights to and from Israel
There is good news for the hundreds of travelers who have been left stranded in Tel Aviv during the two-day prohibition on flights into, and out of, Israel's Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv. The FAA announced it was lifting the ban late Wednesday after a careful review of the security situation and because of measures taken by the Israeli government to protect flights at the airport, the agency said in a statement. The flight restrictions were first imposed after a Hamas rocket landed near the airport Tuesday.
