How many people died in D-Day?

morte-diaD

70 years ago, on June 6, 1944, about 5400 soldiers lost their lives in one of the most important episodes of the 2nd World War.

It was the beginning of the Allied armies to attack German troops in Normandy, northern French coast.

About 6,900 ships, 5,500 aircraft and 160,000 soldiers (including 13 000 paratroopers) from the USA, Britain and Canada crossed the English Channel from England to start the Overlord operation, whose aim was to expel the Nazis from western Europe .

The campaign lasted for nearly 90 days and cost the deaths of 445 000 people (between soldiers and civilians) until the arrival of the allies to Paris in August.

The defeat in France cornered Hitler's armies and sent the war.

From heaven to hell

Among the Allied casualties, 1,200 of them were paratroopers. Many of them, however, may have fallen away from the target, long gone and joined the troops again

In training, simulations and "false" output locations of armed - created to confuse the Nazis about where the Allies would invade French territory - 12 000 lost their lives between April and May 1944 Allied air forces lost 2000 aircraft during preparations

Imagine a soldier ally participating in an operation to free another country (France) defended by a third nationality (German) soldiers. The count of enemy casualties was not a priority for the invaders. Therefore, the estimate of deaths Nazis was only 1,000

civil

Between 15 and 20 thousand French are counted as casualties. Most of them died of bombings in the early hours of the invasion. This number also accounts for the French who left home to escape the conflict
