How Puerto Rico became US territory
Culturally, Puerto Rico is as Latin American as any other country in the region.
However, the island has been a territory owned by the United States for over 120 years.
After belonging to Spain for nearly four centuries, Puerto Rico became the United States at the end of the 19th century.
In other words, it was never an independent country. For some, it is the oldest colony in the world.
