Democratic candidate for governor proudly touts Obamacare
Some Democrats may be reluctant to brag about their support for President Obama and his health care law in the 2014 midterm elections, but not Allyson Schwartz.
The congresswoman who is running for Pennsylvania governor revealed a new campaign ad Tuesday that highlights both her support of Obama and the national health care law, as well as the role she played in getting the law passed.
“I am proud to have worked with President Obama to write and pass the Affordable Care Act, landmark legislation that is helping 8 million Americans get affordable, quality health coverage,” she said in a statement touting the ad.
In the spot, Schwartz slams Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Corbett for not using federal dollars to expand Medicaid. Corbett wants to use federal money to subsidize private health insurance policies, instead of expanding the traditional Medicaid program. His plan is awaiting government approval.
Schwartz is locked in a battle for the Democratic nomination to face Corbett, one of the most endangered Republican governors. Businessman Tom Wolf has cut into her lead in Democratic opinion polls through a barrage of TV ads.
More than 8 in 10 registered voters say a candidate’s stance on the health care law will be an important fact in determining their vote, according to a USA TODAY/Pew Research Center poll taken earlier this month. As he touted the Affordable Care Act last week, Obama said Democrats “should forcefully defend” Obamacare and be proud of the law.
