The new FX drama “Fargo” got off to a promising start on Tuesday, with ratings across several broadcasts that added up to more than four million viewers.
A loose adaptation of the critically acclaimed film by the Coen brothers, the show received some of the strongest reviews of the television season.
Its initial episode, which ran at an unusual length, from 10 p.m. to 11:37 p.m., attracted 2.65 million viewers, about half of them in the category the FX network sells to advertisers — viewers between ages 18 and 49. The network repeated the show two more times Tuesday night, for a total audience of 4.1 million for the night, with about 1.8 million in the 18-49 group.
As with most TV shows now, the audience is expected to increase substantially when delayed viewing is counted.
FX is labeling “Fargo” a mini-series because it will end this story after 10 episodes; but if the show is considered a success a new version with different characters is likely to be ordered. FX has had success in recent years with another series using that mini-series format, “American Horror Story.”
The network also announced Tuesday that it had ordered a third season of another critically praised drama, “The Americans.”
