5 things you need to know Tuesday

1. Day of mourning planned in Santa Barbara
The six victims of a murderous rampage in Californiawill be remembered Tuesday in a "day of mourning and reflection'' by the University of California-Santa Barbara, where they studied and prepared for their future. Elliot Rodger, 22, stabbed to death three roommates at his apartment. He then went on a shooting spree, killing two women at a sorority house before heading to a deli where he killed another UC Santa Barbara student. Rodger was later found dead apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
2. Oldest member of Congress faces tough GOP primary runoff
At age 91, Republican Rep. Ralph Hall insists he still has a lot to offer in Congress, but his vision for the future isn't what is at issue in Tuesday's runoff as Hall seeks renomination to the House seat he first won in 1980. The main topic is Hall himself and whether the oldest man serving in Congress should be elected to an 18th term. John Ratcliffe, the Republican trying to unseat Hall, asserts his issue is not with Hall's age but his tenure. Hall is the last World War II veteran in Congress seeking re-election.
3. Sterling faces deadline in Clippers sale
Today is the deadline for Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling to respond to the NBA after they formally charged him last Monday with violating terms of its constitution and bylaws. Sterling was charged with damaging the league and its teams with his racist comments. The NBA will hold a special meeting of the board of governors on June 3 in New York and vote to end Sterling's ownership of the Clippers.
4. Battle for the National Spelling Bee championship begins

Among the 281 spellers are kids from all 50 states, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, as well as the Bahamas, Canada, China, Ghana, Jamaica, Japan and South Korea. The youngest competitor is 8 years old and two of the spellers are the siblings of previous National Spelling Bee champs.
