 Spain gave me heartache: Manita

Taekwondo star Manita Shahi was heartbroken, frustrated and furious when Spain crashed out of the World Cup in the group stage earlier this week. She has been a Spain supporter ever since she started watching the World Cup four years ago. But her favorite team not only failed to defend its title this time, but also cost her some money in bet by putting up a forgettable performance.

“It was a complete nightmare. Even after its heavy defeat against the Netherlands, I was hoping that Spain would emerge only stronger as it had done in the previous World Cup. But life is not always the same. I lost my bet with my brothers. But that’s not important. What’s important is the way Spain fared in this World Cup,” says the Nepal Police Club athlete.

As a player who has seen both highs and lows in her career, Manita says Spain can try again in the next World Cup. Winning and losing is part of the game. Spanish players tried their best but we have to accept loss with humility,” says Manita, a gold medalist at the 10th South Asian Games and bronze medalist in the Asian Games.

Now that her favorite team is out of the competition, she wishes to see Argentina lift the trophy, only because of Lionel Messi.

“Messi is currently the greatest footballer. What I love most about him is the way he slaloms past a horde of defenders and scores from nothing.

Moreover, he is always down-to- earth,” says Manita.
