World Cup 2014: Italy and Uruguay Vie for Spot in Knockout Round
What to watch for today as the teams from Groups D and C fight to advance. Check out The Upshot for all the possibilities for how teams can advance.
Italy vs. Uruguay, noon: This will be a riveting game, with both teams battling to advance and playing a fascinating contrast of styles. Uruguay attacks, led by the irrepressible Luis Suárez, and Italy tries to defend its opponents to death. It hopes for a flash of offense, usually from Mario Balotelli, but doesn’t like to make a real habit of it. The winner of this game advances; a tie sends the teams to the tiebreaking categories. Each can also still win Group D with a victory, but only if Costa Rica loses and the winner makes up the goal differential — a tall order for either team.

Costa Rica vs. England, noon: Costa Rica is in the cushy position of having already advanced, having won its first two games, and is playing England, who is already eliminated. But Costa Rica does have something to play for: A win or tie would ensure that it wins Group D and gets a friendlier matchup for the knockout stage. Costa Rica has gotten amazing defensive performances from Giancarlo González, Óscar Duarte — who also scored against Uruguay — and Júnior Díaz.
Japan vs. Colombia, 4 p.m.: With two victories, Colombia has clinched a spot in the next round and appears to be a shoo-in to win Group C, too. It would fall out of the top spot if it loses to Japan and if Ivory Coast wins its game by four goals (that is unlikely). This is a young team with a bright future; the 22-year-old midfielder James Rodríguez has scored two of Colombia’s five goals. Japan has scored only one goal in two games, but it has a chance to advance with a victory.
Greece vs. Ivory Coast, 4 p.m.: Both teams are fighting to win a spot in the next round, but it is hard to imagine Greece accomplishing that, considering that it has not scored a goal in the first two games. Ivory Coast, with Didier Drogba coming off the bench for the potential of a blast of second-half energy, has been much more dynamic — sometimes for the good, sometimes not. Gervinho has provided most of the good, with one goal in each game so far.
