ice-bucket-challenge

What's challenge ice bucket has to do with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis?

Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg  In recent days, the challenge of the ice bucket made suceso in social networks and drew attention to a noble cause:

awareness and the fight against amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

In theory, anyone who participates in the challenge can replace the ice bath for the chance to make a donation to an institution that studies the disease. Or do both, that's even cooler.

It is also interesting to understand the cause.

The amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as "Lou Gehrig's disease", gradually destroys brain cells and spinal cord that control the muscles.

Over time, the brain loses the ability to control movement, even lead to paralysis.

No one knows for sure what causes the disease. It is a progressive condition which, as yet, has no cure.

The diagnosis is not synonymous with defeat.

Stephen Hawking received the news that suffered with ALS at age 21.

Five decades later, he is still one of the most important physicists of the world.

After ALS, Hawking completed his Ph.D. in cosmology and became a professor at the prestigious Lucasian Chair at Cambridge, which belonged to Isaac Newton.

But the scientist is an exception. With the deterioration of the brain, the life expectancy is three years.
