Southern California braces for massive waves, possible flooding
As Hurricane Marie spins off Mexico's Pacific coast, it is expected to churn up some major waves in California. While surfers are hoping for 30-foot waves, workers rushed to place sandbags to fortify beaches and protect against potential flooding in low-lying areas. The National Weather Service expects large waves and rip currents along a 100-mile stretch of coastal beaches and is urging swimmers and surfers to be conscious of the danger before chasing after the perfect wave.
Finalists revealed in 'Star Trek'-inspired medical detection device
Ten teams will be named finalists in the $10 million Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE competition to create a lightweight, portable, wireless device that can diagnose and monitor a variety of medical conditions — from anemia to HIV to stroke. The announcement will take place during the opening ceremony of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society International Conference in Chicago. Named for the itell-all medical device seen on Star Trek, the device could potentially advance medical detection by light-years.
NCAA college football season begins
NCAA football fans have a reason to celebrate, as the season kicks off officially Wednesday. Abilene State will go head-to-head against Georgia State later in the evening, but that's just the first game of the season. Thursday will be the true day to watch, as a massive series of 14 opening games — including a top-25 matchupbetween South Carolina and Texas A&M — begins. Wear your team colors with pride.

ICYMI: White House to give a historic Medal of Honor in September
Lt. Alonzo Cushing, who died in the Battle of Gettysburg in 1963, will be awarded the military's highest honor in September. This marks a historical moment in the medal's history, as this award will be given 151 years following Cushing's death — the longest amount of time between the death and of the recipient and the awarding of the medal.
La Tomatina festival tomato fight to be held in Spain
Gentlemen, ripen your weapons. Buñol, Spain, will welcome thousands of fighters and spectators Wednesday in one of the largest food fights in the world. Last year, saw the town's population bounce from 9,000 to around 40,000 to 50,000 for the event, with more than100 metric tons of tomatoes slung.
