Diabetes can increase the risk of dementia in 50%

Diabetes can increase the risk of Alzheimer's and other types of dementia by 50%, says annual report released yesterday by the disease Alzheimer's Disease International (ADI), an international organization that brings together active associations in the topic. The report, released on World Alzheimer's Day,

celebrated on Sunday, underscores the importance of controlling preventable risk factors usually associated with lifestyle. That's because, according to the document, not just genetics, aging and the level of intellectual activity that contribute to the onset of the disease.

The report says that "the control of diabetes and hypertension, as well as measures to promote the end of smoking and reducing cardiovascular risk, have the potential to reduce the risk of dementia."

Despite the importance of controlling these risk factors, numbers presented in the report show that the majority of the population does not know the relationship between these diseases and Alzheimer's.
