Golden Gate Bridge is 46 suicides in 2013

San Francisco - The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, recorded a mark of 46 suicides in 2013, in what appears to be the year with the highest number of cases in this postcard Californian, according to a survey of an entity that performs this count. 

The Bridge Rail Foundation, which counts deaths in 1280 meters of length of the bridge, said the high number of suicides demonstrates the need for a safety net that makes it difficult jumps into the void. 

"I know she will not be installed soon, and this is the most frustrating," said Dayna Whitmer, advisor of the organization. "We hate to see more people jumping for 17 years and more people jumping 86 years, is not right." The floor of the bridge is 67 meters above the sea surface at the entrance of San Francisco Bay. The Golden Gate is one of the most public places used for suicides in the world, and almost all attempts result in death. 

Mary Currie, spokeswoman for the Highway and Transportation District Golden Gate Bridge, confirmed the occurrence of 46 suicides on the bridge last year, the highest annual count since at least 2000, when she began to enter the details. 

According to her, police and others intervened to prevent other people from 118 jump in 2013. 

Whitmer said the number of suicides last year, up from 33 in 2012, is "the highest we can confirm that" since the construction of the bridge in 1937 believed that the previous record is 40 or 41 deaths in a single year. 

An analysis published by the San Francisco Chronicle showed there were 40 suicides on the Golden Gate in 1977. 

The authorities have a project to install a network of sidewalks under the bridge, but still seek the $ 66 million needed for the work. In 2011, a firm received $ 5 million to design the network, according to Currie.
