James Cameron: "fulfilled a childhood dream"
The Canadian filmmaker James Cameron speaks dive that made up one of the deepest points of the ocean, alone, to film his new documentary, "Deepsea Challenge"
The newest production of filmmaker James Cameron, creator of blockbusters like Titanic (1997) and Avatar (2009), was not made to beat box office records.
To run it, Cameron has developed a submarine capable of withstanding the pressure of local funds over the ocean.
The documentary Deepsea Challenge, although no date to go in Brazil, shows that Cameron made the dive alone on March 26, 2012 to the Mariana Trench, more than 10,000 feet deep, after six hours of descent.
It was the second time someone managed to get there.
In this dispatch, great personal risk,
Cameron realized a childhood dream: to be a great explorer.
You were the second person to descend to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, one of the deepest parts of the Pacific Ocean, with 10,908 meters deep. When this idea come from?
James Cameron - It was a childhood dream, but even started working on it in 2002, when I created with my team, the concept of how the expedition would be. I descend alone, a submarine created especially for this purpose, and would film in 3D part of the ocean that the public has never seen. This adventure would do a documentary telling how the whole expedition was put together and talking about the discoveries we would do there.
TIME - What were these discoveries?
Cameron - In the material I could collect on the descent, there are almost 20 000 types of microbes and 60 new species of crustaceans. One of them, like a minicamarão is tested as a potential aid in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.
TIME - What was the hardest part of the project?
Cameron - were many. Earlier, it was essential to note that it is possible to control a robotic vehicle on the seabed. Our actual test were filming we did the interior of the Titanic in 2005 designed a system to allow the transmission of images captured from the seabed, live via satellite. We sent the remotely controlled vehicle into the Titanic. While he filmed the interior of the vessel, the system transmitted images to the submarine where we were a few feet away. The submarine received the pictures and sent them to the boat on the surface. From there, they followed for the satellite to be distributed in real time. Were two major achievements: we set up a system of transmitting live images of the seabed unprecedented in history; and create a project of maritime engineering able to explore the deepest places on Earth.
TIME - You ran physical risks that expedition?
Cameron - Four concerns accompanied us from start to finish: the ball could implode because of the pressure, which increased as I descended deeper; failures in electronic cables could allow the erosion of parts of the sphere, because of contact with salt water; the reduction of oxygen could leave me unconscious; and any small fire coming from a short-circuit could be lethal. Being diver with over 20 years of practice, I can hold my breath for over four minutes, but do not know if I could survive the smoke inside a tiny booth. Before each dive, I spent three hours inside the cabin and memorized all the commands in order to do all of shut eye.
SEASON - There was some fright?
Cameron - The largest dip occurred in the test with the submarine Deepsea Challenge. Think about the temperature of a notebook, used by many hours on top of his legs. Now imagine a small cabin with dozens of hot equipment like this, a place where the air does not circulate. On first down, the capsule was so hot that I felt bad, I got to stay mentally confused, alone, in the seabed. The operation had to be aborted. As there was no way to increase the area of the capsule to the air circulation, the solution was down with most equipment off. It was six hours of descent. As we reached greater depths, with lower temperature, turn on the necessary equipment.
TIME - You have just turned 60. Some teaching that age brought?
Cameron - None. I do not understand the value of this age. I have the energy of a person of 30 years.
