1. Derek Jeter says goodbye to New York in his last home game
One of baseball's greatest stars will play his last home game as a New York Yankee on Thursday, just ahead of his entrance into retirement at the end of the season. His farewell journey has been met withincreased merchandise sales, skyrocketing ticket prices for his last games and even a Derek Jeter Day at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 7. The 40-year-old shortstop has been playing for 20 years and will conclude his iconic career officially on Sunday.

2. Hong Kong students demand democratic elections
After a week of protests from college students throughout Hong Kong over the lack of freedom in the coming 2017 election, student leaders have threatened to surround government buildings. They are demanding a meeting with Hong Kong's Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying, who has refused to meet with them, and have invited high school students to join the strike on Friday.
3. Thomson Reuters unveils its 2014 Nobel Prize predictions
Ding ding, we have a winner...well, maybe. Thomson Reuters will release its Citation Laureates study on Thursday, highlighting their picks for winners of the coveted 2014 Nobel Prize in a number of scientific fields. Since 2002, this annual report has correctlypredicted 27 winners across a number of categories.
4. Twitpic officially shuts down after Twitter trademark dispute
The Twitter-friendly photo service Twitpic will shut down Thursday over a trademark dispute with the social media platform. Twitpic launched in 2008, not long after Twitter came into existence, and will drop their trademark or lose access to their API. "Unfortunately we do not have the resources to fend off a large company like Twitter to maintain our mark, which we believe wholeheartedly is rightfully ours," said Twitpic founder Noah Everett. The company will have more details on how to export older pictures and videos.
5. U.S., coalition forces hit oil refineries in Syria
U.S. aircraft and those from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates struck Islamic State targets in Syria, including 12 oil refineries, the U.S. Central Command said. In Britain, Prime Minister David Cameron is preparing to make the case to legislatorsFriday on why his country should join the U.S.-led bombing campaign against ISIL or ISIS targets.
