5 things you need to know now

While visiting the Department of Homeland Security on Wednesday, President Trump signed two executive orders on immigration. The first order directs federal funding to the construction of the U.S. border wall, a key promise of Trump's presidential campaign. Trump indicated in an interview with ABC News' David Muir set to air Wednesday night that construction on the wall will begin in "months," and he repeated his claim that Mexico will reimburse the U.S. for "100 percent" of the wall's costs. The second order revokes federal grants from "sanctuary cities" and any U.S. city not enforcing federal immigration laws. Trump is also expected in the coming days to issue orders temporarily banning refugees from certain countries and suspending visas for people from several Middle Eastern and North African countries.

The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence issued a statement Wednesday announcing its plans to undertake an assessment of "Russian activities and intentions in recent U.S. elections." "While the committee has already begun to receive important documents, we trust that the incoming leadership of the intelligence community will fully and promptly support our requests for information related to the inquiry," Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), the committee's ranking member, said in a statement. The committee plans to look into Russian cyberactivity, counterintelligence concerns potentially linking Russia to campaign officials, how the U.S. government responded to information about the hacks, and possible leaks of classified information. "This issue is not about the party, but about the country," Schiff said. "The committee will continue to follow the facts wherever they may lead."

The Dow Jones Industrial Average broke history twice Wednesday, opening and closing above 20,000 points for the first times ever, less than one week after President Trump took office. The Dow, which has consistently rallied since Trump won the presidential election in November, has been hovering right below 20,000 for more than a month; on Jan. 6, it came within just one point of the breakthrough. Reuters reported Wednesday's boost was due to the numerous executive orders Trump has signed since taking office Friday, including his revivals of the Keystone and Dakota Access oil pipelines. Because of Trump's vows to roll back regulations, energy companies and financial services have seen the biggest jumps in their stocks.

President Donald Trump announced Wednesday his intention to investigate the possibility of voter fraud in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Trump has repeatedly claimed that "millions" of people voted illegally in the election, although such allegations are unsubstantiated. "I will be asking for a major investigation into VOTER FRAUD, including those registered to vote in two states, those who are illegal, and even those registered to vote who are dead," Trump tweeted. "Depending on results, we will strengthen up voting procedures!" Trump's declaration comes hours after CNN's Jake Tapper challenged the White House to provide evidence to back up Trump's claims: "There is a reason they are providing no evidence," Tapper said. "There is no evidence ― it is not true."

Actress Mary Tyler Moore has died of pneumonia, her longtime publicist said Wednesday. She was 80. One of the biggest stars of the '60s and '70s, Moore appeared in countless TV shows and movies, including The Dick Van Dyke Show; Ordinary People, for which she received an Oscar nomination; and the eponymous The Mary Tyler Moore Show, one of the first shows to feature a single, working woman, turning Moore into an icon for the feminist movement.
