Russia criticizes US threats to Venezuela

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday dismissed the threat of military intervention by President Donald Trump as unacceptable against Venezuela, which has been plunged into serious political and social crisis for months.

"It is necessary that the disagreements in the country be overcome as soon as possible, and only through peaceful means, through dialogue," Lavrov said in a joint statement with his Bolivian counterpart Fernando Huanacuni Mamani.

The head of Russian diplomacy rejected any external pressure, including "the unacceptable threat of military intervention."

The president of the United States said on Friday that he did not rule out "a possible military option" in Venezuela.

"We have many options for Venezuela, including a possible military option if necessary," said the president, recalling that the country is a neighbor of the United States and that, therefore, Washington could opt for a military operation to resolve the situation in the country South American.

"We have troops all over the world in very distant places. Venezuela is not far away and people are suffering and dying, "he told reporters.
