Fire at Russian submarine kills 14 people
Did military research vessel in deep waters; fire was extinguished
A fire in a research submarine from Russia killed 14 crew members, reported on Tuesday, 2, the Ministry of defense in Moscow.
The accident happened in the morning Monday 1 and the blaze was extinguished. The vessel, dubbed Losharik, studying the marine environment and the ocean floor in Russian territorial waters. The 14 victims were intoxicated by smoke.
The Ministry of Defense explained how many people were aboard the submarine when the fire started. The vessel was recovered and is now at the base of the Russian fleet in Severomorsk, in the Barents Sea in the North of the country.
The submarine AS-12, popularly known as Losharik, was released by Russia in 2003 and is used for research, rescue and military special operations. Can carry up to 25 people.
In August 2000, the nuclear-powered submarine Kursk sank in the Barents Sea after two explosions in your bow, killing all 118 men aboard.
