Pentagon says 11 Americans were wounded in Iranian attack
U.S.Department of Defense officials said Friday, 17, that 11 U.S. soldiers were wounded in Iran's attack on al-Asad's military base on January 8. In a speech in response to the Iranian offensive, U.S. President Donald Trumphad said that "no Americans were hurt."
"Although no U.S. military personnel died in the January 8 attack on al-Asad's military base, many were treated with concussion symptoms due to [missile] explosion and are still being evaluated," said a spokesman for The Central Command of states United, Captain Bill Urban.
According to Urban, eight soldiers were taken to Germany and three to Kuwait in the Middle East for "subsequent screenings."
On January 8, Tehran launched a missile attack on the military bases of Al-Asad and Erbil, Iraq, which housed American soldiers. The move was retaliation for the United States operation that killed Iranian General Qasem Soleimani about five days earlier.
More than 10 missiles hit Al-Asad and only one reached Erbil. According to the Israeli newspaper The Times of Israel,Iran claims that 80 U.S. soldiers were killed during the offensive.
In a speech responding to the Iranian attack on January 9, President Donald Trump said there were no injuries. "I am pleased to inform you that the American people must be extremely grateful and happy. No Americans were injured in the attack."
