Coronavirus: Illegal immigration to the US via the Mexico border drops 50%''
The United States National Security Secretariat reported that the total number of attempts to illegally cross the border with Mexico fell by 50% due to the migratory restrictions negotiated with the Mexican government and in effect since midnight on Friday. Since Saturday, the border between the two countries has been closed to non-essential traffic . American officials say the closure of the border will serve to stem the progress of the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) from side to side.
"In the past 24 hours, we've seen a 50% drop in arrests of illegal immigrants crossing the border [with Mexico]," Chad Wolf , acting secretary of national security on Sunday 22, told Fox News. Wolf warns that arresting illegal immigrants, especially due to the lack of documentation on their medical history, could lead to the spread of the new coronavirus in immigration detention centers.
The American border with Mexico has been closed since midnight on Friday for all non-essential traffic, which mainly involves tourism, shopping and leisure. American authorities have imposed the same restrictions on its border with Canada since Saturday . Wolf, however, denies that bilateral trade has been restricted.
“We are trying not to close the border. We are trying to impose measures so that legal trade and necessary travel continue to flow across Mexican and Canadian borders, ”he said. Wolf points out that more than $ 3 billion in trade moves across American borders every day with its two neighbors - $ 1.7 billion with Canada and $ 1.5 billion with Mexico.
