A gunman killed at least ten people, including a police officer, in a supermarket in the city of Boulder, Colorado, according to local officials.

The shooting at the King Soopers market started around 2:30 pm local time and, with the arrival of the police, clashes and attempts at negotiation went on for hours. The attack ended with what appeared to be a shirtless suspect taken by police outside the establishment.

Witnesses broadcast the shooting live on networks like YouTube.

The police only provided details about the police officer killed in the confrontation with the sniper.

Two hours later, the police issued a new message asking residents to avoid the region.

"DO NOT broadcast any tactical information you can witness on social media," added the tweet.

However, part of the incident was captured by the camera of a person who was at the scene and filmed victims.

"I don't know what's going on ... I heard shots, someone fell," shouts the man, at the sound of shots as he runs out of the store. The video continues and shows the police arriving and surrounding the market.

Victims' identities still to be released by Colorado authorities

At a press conference with reporters, Boulder's chief of police, Maris Herold, confirmed that a suspect was arrested. "I want to assure the community that they are safe."

According to her, the police officer killed in the suit was Eric Talley, a 51-year-old man who has worked for the Boulder Police Department since 2010.

"This officer took a heroic action in responding to what happened ... There were calls from shots fired in the area and a call about a possible person with a rifle," she said, adding: "Officer Talley was the first on the scene, and he was shot dead. "

Herold did not provide further details about the shooting, but said the investigation was "very complex" and would take "at least five days to complete".

The names of the other victims will not be released until the relatives are informed.

President Joe Biden was informed of the shooting, the White House said.

On Twitter, Colorado Governor Jared Polis said: "My prayers are with our fellow Coloradans at this time of sadness and grief, as we learn more about the extent of the tragedy."
