Prince Harry, grandson of Queen Elizabeth II and Duke of Sussex, returned to the UK to attend his grandfather's funeral, Prince Philip , who died at 99 on Friday (9/3).

The ceremony will take place on Saturday (3/17) , in the Chapel of St. George, which is on the grounds of Windsor Castle.

This is the first time that Prince Harry has visited the country since he and his wife, Meghan Markle, left their official royal duties in March last year.

But how was Harry allowed to enter the country amid restrictions due to the covid-19 pandemic? Understand.

Is Meghan going to the funeral?

No. Harry will be unaccompanied at his grandfather's funeral. According to Buckingham Palace, Meghan will remain at her home in California for health reasons.

The Duchess of Sussex is pregnant with her second child and was advised by her doctor not to travel.

Does Harry have to quarantine?

Like other people coming to the country from abroad, Harry will have to follow the government's travel rules for the coronavirus.

They stipulate that people arriving in the UK must:

  • Take a covid-19 exam within three days of departure. To be allowed entry, the result must be negative.
  • Fill in a declaration of arrival giving details of where the person will be staying
  • Quarantine for 10 days and do more tests on the second and eighth days.

However, there are some exceptions and some extra measures depending on where the person comes from.

Arriving from Ireland and some other places considered "common travel area" in the UK do not need to take the exams.

If the person comes from one of the countries on the "red list" (which includes Brazil), extra measures are needed, such as quarantining a hotel.

As Harry arrived from the USA, which is currently not on the list, he will not need to quarantine a hotel.

The British government explains that people can isolate themselves in their own homes, "with friends and family" or in a hotel or other form of temporary accommodation.

A spokesman for the Duke of Sussex said he is staying at his former residence, Frogmore Cottage, in the gardens of Windsor Castle, and is following pandemic regulations.

Will Harry be able to attend the funeral?

During the lockdown, guidelines for conducting funerals in England allow people who came from abroad for the ceremony to leave their quarantine location "in certain circumstances, including out of compassion".

This includes attending a funeral for a close relative or friend.

The person needs to isolate himself at all other times and must follow the rules of social detachment.

Prince Harry could also choose to end the 10-day quarantine with new government rules that allow "release after testing".

This allows people in England to pay for a private covid exam on the fifth day of quarantine - in other circumstances, the exams are free, provided by the UK's public health system, the NHS.

If the private exam is negative, the person can end the isolation. However, if it is positive, you need to isolate yourself for another 10 days.

What will the funeral be like?

The ceremony will be broadcast on television and will be much smaller than the major state events generally associated with the death of a monarch.

On the day of the funeral, Prince Philip's coffin will be transported from Windsor Castle to St. George's Chapel in a specially modified Land Rover, which he himself helped design.

Members of the Royal Family, including Charles, the Prince of Wales, will walk behind the coffin. The queen will go separately to the chapel.

Only 30 people - including children, grandchildren and other close relatives of the duke - will be able to attend the ceremony under the rules of social distance that are in force throughout the country.

The prime minister's office said Boris Johnson will not attend the funeral to allow "as many family members as possible" to attend.

Guests will keep their distance and will wear masks, according to restrictions due to the pandemic.

Military weapons will fire during the procession, which will take eight minutes.

Eight porters must carry the coffin with Prince Philip's body up the steps of the chapel. The coffin will be covered with the duke's banner and crown, in addition to the duke's naval hat and sword.

The ceremony will be celebrated by the dean of Windsor and the archbishop of Canterbury, leader of the Anglican Church.

These 10 people are not included in the number of participants allowed. An official guest list will be announced shortly.
