Chinese city creates exclusive range for mobile users

In Chongqing, pedestrians can choose between the normal sidewalk or 'track' oriented to mobile users

CHONGQING - Who has not stumbled, almost hit his head on the pole or bumped into one while walking on the street using your smartphone? Seeking to prevent such accidents, a Chinese city had a creative idea: from now on, a pedestrian street in Chongqing have options on a sidewalk path of 165 meters and can walk in a normal range or an exclusive track for those are using your mobile phone.

"There are many elderly and children on our street, and walking with a mobile phone can cause unnecessary accidents here," said Nong Cheng, head of the group responsible for the central area of Chongqing marketing.

The idea is based on an experiment conducted by the National Geographic earlier this year in Washington DC (USA), supposedly done to improve the care of the lack of attention that many people have to use their smartphones while walking around.

The problem to walk around without paying attention to anything beyond the small screen in front is not unique to China. According to the University of Washington, one in three Americans is busy with a smartphone or other device while crossing the street at dangerous intersections. In addition, the Department of Transportation of the United States recently established a connection between the amount of pedestrian accidents and pedestrian deaths and the use of smartphones.

However, the practice of exclusive tracks for anyone who is using a smartphone does not seem successful: shortly after the introduction of the track in Chongqing, she seemed to be very successful. "Who is using smartphones not used the exclusive track on the sidewalk. They did not even notice it existed!" Said Nong.
