At what rate is the destruction of the Amazon rainforest?

The devastation following at a worrying level.

Each year, disappear about 20 000 km2 of forest - equivalent to the state of Sergipe area!

The destruction of the green moved in the early 1970s, when President Medici decided to open major roads in the region.

The situation improved somewhat in the 80s, a time of recession, when the average annual destruction fell to 12 000 km2, the size of Jamaica.

But it was not until the economy improved slightly to deforestation reached its record:

in the first years of the Real Plan in 1994, no less than 29 000 km2, roughly the size of Belgium, turned to dust.

In the following years, this shameful index fell slightly, but rose again in 2002, with 23 700 km2 devastated.

"Fluctuations of deforestation happen more by varying the economy than by environmental measures," says environmentalist Paul Adário of Greenpeace.

According to ecologists, there are four main villains in the destruction of the Amazon: the opening of roads, cutting of trees to produce wood and the advancement of livestock and agriculture through the forest.
