Northern Italy begins to be isolated by coronavirus outbreak
Authorities in northern Italy, including those in the city of Milan, decided on Sunday (23) to close schools, museums, theaters, cinemas and places of great circulation due to the increase in the number of cases of the new coronavirus in the country, which caused three deaths in the last days. The number of infected people in the region reached 152, including the three killed, according to the latest report presented by the head of Civil Protection, Angelo Borrelli.
The third victim was from the Crema region, 40 kilometers from Milan, according to Giullio Gallera, health secretary for the Lombardy region. "This is an elderly woman, who was hospitalized in a serious condition in the oncology sector and who had been infected with the coronavirus," explained Gallero during a press conference.
The three killed by the new coronavirus in Italy were very sick and were elderly. The authorities of Lombardy, one of the most industrialized regions of the country, decided to close very symbolic points like the cathedral, the famous Duomo.
The mayor of Milan, capital of the Lombard region, Giuseppe Sala has prepared a series of very strict measures, for a period of 7 to 15 days. The government had decreed yesterday the total isolation of 11 cities in the north of the country, including 10 in Lombardy and 1 near Padua, in the Veneto region, to which Venice belongs
Earlier, Italian authorities reported the suspension of the Venice carnival as a result of the outbreak. “We plan to suspend the carnival and all sporting events until March 1,” declared the governor of the Veneto region, Luca Zaia, to the SkyTg24 news channel.
