Wave of violence at festival heightens fear of radical protests in Chile

Violence returned to the streets of Chile before the start of the traditional international festival in the city of Viña del Mar , on Sunday (23). After the event, officials said they feared the radicalization of the protests scheduled for next March.
The six-day event was opened by Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin , who expressed support for social protests in the country. "I am with you Chile, never silent, always with love and peace", said the 48-year-old singer.
Summoned by social networks, thousands of protesters gathered near the festivities, at the Amphitheater Quinta Vergara, and starred in violent confrontations with the police who were security at the entrance of the participants in the event.
A traditional hotel in the city was attacked and guests - including several festival participants - were removed. At least thirty commercial establishments were attacked and looted by protesters. Cars were set on fire. The main demand was the suspension of the festival, in support of the protests.
